A Letter to Our Parents and Students

July 24, 2010

Dear Parents and Students,

Kansas City Youth Jazz will embark on a new year of exciting activities in 2010-2011, this is our 10Th year. The 2009-2010 was a year of firsts for KCYJ, The Reno band as one of the premier conglomerate high school jazz bands in the United States was invited and performed at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in California. All of the KCYJ Bands had the opportunity to perform throughout the city and show off your great and talented young adults. We added the new 12:30 Combo and along with the 11:30 Combo, KCYJ gets the music out to the community with many playing opportunities. As president of the board, I would like to thank each of you for your support.

Kansas City Youth Jazz, like many non-profit and arts organizations, has seen a reduction in different categories of funding over the past two years. To keep the exceptional quality of KCYJ programming, it has become necessary to make changes to the tuition structure.

There will be an increase in tuition for all groups, with a graduated scale according to band placement:

Reno Band (top group)
Practice: Mondays,  6:00 to 7:30 pm
Tuition: $265 / semester

Orchid Band (advanced)
Practice: Saturday 10:00 to 11:30 am
Tuition: $255 / semester

Sunset Band (intermediate)
Practice: Saturday  9:30 to 11:00 am
Tuition: $245 / semester

Hey Hay (elementary)
Practice: Saturday  11:00 to 12:30 pm
Tuition: $245 / semester

In addition to the tuition payment, ALL students will be expected to provide at least $100 in Business Sponsors each semester. Visit your grocery store, orthodontist, car dealership, bank or other businesses that your family patronizes and ask for their support.  Necessary letters and forms are available on the KCYJ Website.

Enrollment and band placements will be Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am to 12 noon at the KCYJ Studio, 1317 Central Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. Please bring your instrument and music that you have prepared and be ready to play for the KCYJ instructors.  Student placements will be posted on the KCYJ Website.

Due to the increased number of performance opportunities, students chosen for the Reno Band will be expected to make a year long commitment from August 30, 2010 through May 8, 2011.

Enrollment forms are on the website and will be provided at placement.  Parents will be expected to make a $100 tuition payment at the time of enrollment.  The balance of tuition is due at the first rehearsal (August 28 or 30) after band placement has been determined.

The Business Sponsor payments for the fall semester are due by October 30, 2010.  If the family does not find Business Sponsors, the family is responsible for the entire fee. Some scholarship assistance is available for band tuition, but will not cover Business Sponsorships or combo or other classes.  Payment plans are available.
